Jana Kasalová se narodila v roce 1974 v Turnově do rodiny výtvarníků Svatopluka Kasalého a Jany Kasalové, dětství strávila v severočeském Železném Brodě. Od sklářské rodinné tradice se odchýlila již studiem textilního a oděvního návrhářství na Střední uměleckoprůmyslové škole v Brně, následně studovala malbu u Jiřího Načeradského na brněnské Fakultě výtvarných umění. V posledním roce zde obdržela cenu za malbu. Během brněnských studií v devadesátých letech absolvovala také dvě stáže – na pražské AVU (1996) a rok na to na Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton, Velká Británie). V roce 1999 odjela na rezidenci v New Yorku. Své doktorské studium se Kasalová rozhodla absolvovat ve Španělsku v Cuence a Madridu na Universidad Castilla-La Mancha a Universidad Complutense. To ji bylo umožněno díky státnímu španělskému stipendium a stipendiu Nadace Dagmar a Václava Havlových VIZE 97. V rozmezí oficiální postgraduální docházky od roku 2000 do roku 2002 získala barcelonskou Royal Talens Painting Award. Během dvouletého období 2002–2004 žila a tvořila v Londýně, New Yorku a v Paříži, odkud v roce 2005 natrvalo přesídlila do Prahy. Titul PhD. z výtvarných umění a arteterapie na Universidad Castilla-La Mancha získala v roce 2010.

Jana Kasalová was born in 1974 in Turnov to the family of artists Svatopluk Kasalý and Jana Kasalová; she spent her childhood in Železný Brod, North Bohemia. She broke with her family’s glassmaking tradition by studying textile and fashion design at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Brno, and subsequently studied painting under Jiří Načeradský at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. In her final year there, she received an award for painting. During her studies in Brno in the 1990s, she also completed two internships—at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1996) and, a year later, at the Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton, United Kingdom). In 1999, she left for an artist residency in New York. Kasalová decided to pursue her doctoral studies in Spain, in Cuenca and Madrid, at the Universidad Castilla-La Mancha and the Universidad Complutense. This was made possible thanks to a Spanish government scholarship and a scholarship from the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VIZE 97. During her official postgraduate studies from 2000 to 2002, she won the Royal Talens Painting Award in Barcelona. During the two-year period from 2002 to 2004, she lived and worked in London, New York, and Paris, from where she moved permanently to Prague in 2005. She earned her PhD in Fine Arts and Art Therapy from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in 2010.
